Acer palmatum 'Tsuma gaki'
'Tsuma gaki' is a bushy maple that will only reach 2.5m in 10 years.
Leaves emerge bright yellow with a bold red edge in spring, softening to lime green in summer. Autumn sees the colours turn to various shades of red. Sometimes known as 'Red Fingernails'.
Being a relatively small tree, it is suitable for container growing or for use in a smaller landscape.
'Tsuma gaki' will tolerate sun or partial shade, but benefits from protection from the harsh afternoon sun. Will be happy in most soil types. Looks stunning when mass planted, but also makes a lovely stand-alone feature.
Low maintenance. Only prune to remove dead, diseased or crossing branches.
Garden Care:
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
