Acer palmatum 'Sumi nagashi' is a lovely large-leaved variety. The leaves are bright purple-red in the spring. Later they darken to become almost black-red or very deep maroon. Then the colour gradually changes to a deep green-red. The foliage holds the early colour better in afternoon shade. The autumn colour is crimson.
This strong-growing semi-upright tree can reach ut to 6 m. Makes an excellent landscape plant.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
