Acer japonicum 'Ruby' is a small, upright Full Moon maple. Its dramatic foliage emerges black-red then brightens in late spring, turns bronze-green in the summer to give the most amazing display of orange, red and purple hues in autumn.
This Japanese maple grows really slowly and can reach 2.5m x 0.9m after 10 years.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
