Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'

Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki'

This famous cultivar is best known for its intense autumn colours. Its crimson foliage is thought to be the most intense of all maples. At dusk, the tree appears to glow.

Osakazuki is a sturdy, hardy grower with medium to large-sized seven lobed leaves. Each leaf is broadly ovate, tapering to a narrow tip. The margins are uniformly toothed.

For most of the growing season, the foliage is a rich green. Unusually sun tolerant, the leaves don't burn easily.

This cultivar forms a rounded top and will only reach 8m in height. It has an attractive open habit.

Often companion planted with 'Ichigyo' to make a stunning autumn display.

Although pruning is rarely necessary, it should be carried out in the dormant season, before leaves appear. Then only remove crossed, dead or diseased branches.

Garden Care:

Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.

Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.

In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
