Acer palmatum 'Sango - kaku' is a small tree with an upright habit. Also known as the 'Coral bark maple' The foliage is pinkish - green when it emerges, then turns bright green in the summer and golden yellow with hints of red in autumn. The best Acer for the year-round interest at any garden with its vibrant coral pink bark for winter interest.
Prefers a sheltered position. Can reach 4m x 2m in 20 years. Protect from cold winds. A slow grower.
Suits most soil types. Keep moist but well drained. Tolerates full sun or partial shade.
As with most maples, very little pruning is required. Should it become necessary, pruning should be carried out in the dormant season. Then only remove dead, diseased or crossing branches. Fertilize in spring if needed.
