Acer palmatum 'Japanese Sunrise' is very similar to 'Sango kaku' but its colourful winter shoots are a lighter red than 'Sango kaku' on the upper, exposed side and yellow-orange on the sheltered side. The foliage is typical of the Palmatum Group and emerges yellow-green. becoming a light green in the summer. The autumn colours are yellow gold and crimson. This variety grows into a narrow, upright, vase-shaped tree up to 7m tall at maturity.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
