Acer palmatum 'Enkan' is a dwarf, red variety with strap-like leaves. It is very similar to 'Red Pygmy' but holds its deep wine colour even better. It is the darkest of the linearilobums. It bears medium-sized, five-lobed, deeply divided leaves. Each leaf has a bluntly pointed or rounded tip. The purple-red leaf stalks are quite short.
'Enkan' is an upright tree of up to 3m in height. It will grow with a prostrate habit unless staked. Forms an attractive architectural shape naturally. Prune in autumn or mid-winter if required.
A low maintenance tree. Good for small gardens and container planting.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
