Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is a slow-growing tree that bears large, deeply divided lobes which are ovate in shape, tapering to a fine point. The leaves are rich purple in spring, deepening in summer. In autumn foliage has a beautiful vivid crimson red colour.
This handsome bushy Japanese maple can reach approximately 4 x 4m in 20 years.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
