Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' is a small tree with an upright habit. A superb hardy variety with pink edged white and green leaves in spring, losing their pink edge in summer but remain strongly variegated. Striking red autumn foliage. Excellent variety for patio pots.
Prefers a sheltered position. Can reach 4m x 1.5m in 20 years. Protect from cold winds. A slow grower.
Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.
Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.
In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
